On a large A1 sheet og paper students are to write continually and uninterrupted for 25 min, each sentence should start "I remember...". Students should not worry too much about spelling and punctuation their writing will only be read by them.
Students should be told to be truthful and that the writing will not be read by tutors or peers unless permission is granted.
The aim of the exercise is to uncover memories that are on the edge of being forgotten.
Encourage students to think about small details, places, smells, encouters, observations, mistakes, minor embarrassments, trends, friendships, jokes, journeys, dreams, food, etc...
I do this exercise and I saw how difficult is for me to clear my mind and just let the image come to me without force it. I want to repeat this exercise because I don't feel it like a very brainstorming, my mind tried to give a "line" to my memories. In two moment I got to force myself to think about something, because nothing come.
This exercise is not easy like it appear and is a good point to start to undesrstand how our mind work. Mine maybe is too much used to have all under control. I need to learn how to "release" the mind.
